In the start we find the two characters in the book, George and Lennie,
resting by a river called Salinas River. '
They are two very different persons, not just in size, but also in brain capacity. George is the little and keen one, while Lennie is the big man with huge biceps,
but with a very small brain. (A deeper analysis of them is described in the
character analysis) The reason why George and Lennie are resting by the Salinas
River is because they’re on their way to an agriculture-area,
where they expect to sign up for temporary work.They are not only just there for
work, they are also on the run from the police because of Lennie’s
addiction to soft, furry things made him rape a woman in Soledad.
Lennie has a reputation of ‘’screwing’’ things up, so George wants
to have a plan if something goes wrong. He therefore asks Lennie to
familiarise with the place so they have a place to meet if something goes terrible wrong.
(In the end, they certainly need this place) After the rest by the river,
they start walking again, and the next morning they arrive to the farm
where they expect to find work. Candy, an old ‘’swamper’’, or handyman,
with one missing hand, meets them and says welcome.
They quickly find the bunkhouse ( the place where the workers live), and they also get to know some
other characters in the story.The boss’s son Curley is one of them. He is newly wedded to a flirtatious wife.When George and Lennie are left alone with Curley’s wife in the bunkhouse, the lady starts to flirt with Lennie.George senses trouble with this, because he doesn’t want to make the boss angry, and he knows what Lennie is capable of doing, so he tells Lennie to stay away from her.
As the days go by, George and Lennie work hard on the farm, and they are starting to get a good life there.
But one day, this ‘’good’’ life turns ugly. The most of the workes are outside throwing horseshoes, but Lennie is in
the barn where he meets Curley’s wife again. Like the last time, they start flirting, and Lennie tells her that he likes to touch
‘’nice things’’ like her hair. The flirting gets more intense, and Lennie turns violent. As the stroking gets harder, Curley’s
wife panics, and tries to escape. In frustration, Lennie accidently breaks her neck, and he realizes that he is in deep trouble.
Lennie doesn’t know what to do, but suddenly he remembers the place where he and George had agreed to meet each other
if something went wrong. Now was the right time to go there.
When the other workers find the victim of Lennie’s mental disease, Curley demands everybody to find Lennie and kill him.
George is the only one who knows where Lennie is hiding, so he meets him at their appointed place.
